The parallel fiber optic transceiver uses a special optical communication technology to transmit and receive signals at both ends of the link, so they are also called parallel optical transceivers. Compared with traditional optical transmission mode, parallel optical transmission has different original structure for supporting high-speed signal transmission, and it is used with short distance multimode optical fiber less than 300 meters. Under the condition that traditional fiber optic transceiver can not meet high-speed transmission (such as 40G optical transmission), parallel optical communication technology provides effective and cost saving solutions for 40/100G optical transmission.

Comparing parallel optical communication technology with traditional serial optical communication technology, it can better explain what is parallel optical fiber and why it is a more cost-effective solution for high-speed transmission.

The signal transmission of parallel and serial optics is different. In parallel optical transmission, duplex transmission is implemented in different ways. The transmission and reception of the signals are done through multiple channels, so the parallel optical communication can support a higher rate than the traditional optical communication.

IEEE has defined the specification of the physical layer, as well as the management parameters of the 40/100G optical transmission. The two widely used parallel fiber optic transceiver, which support the transmission of 40/100G on multimode fiber, will be mentioned below. For 40G transmission, the 40GBASE-SR4 optical module needs at least eight OM3/ OM4 optical fibers for signal transmission and reception, of which 4 optical fibers are used for transmitters, and the other 4 optical fibers are used for receivers. The 100GBASE-SR10 optical transceiver is used for 100G optical transmission, which requires at least 20 OM3/ OM4 optical fibers. 10 of them are used for transmitters, and the other 10 optical fibers are used for receivers.

The application of parallel fiber optic transceiver and MPO technology is developing continuously, and the transmission capacity will also improve. It can gradually support more high-speed optical transmission, including 40/100G Ethernet transmission. However, whether or not the parallel optical communication can become the future direction of communication is still uncertain.
